Halloween is our next big event! I already have heard from some scared people. These people are scared of tiny little chocolate bars! Have no fear these bars have no power unless you give them power. Seeing as this holiday is based around junk food you’re going to have to face it.

There is going to be junk around and you are going to have to control yourself.

Here I’m going to give you lots of healthy options to bring to parties, gatherings or to have at your own home during Halloween. Keep in mind that the children in your life are going to be having enough white sugar to last them a lifetime during Halloween. So, prepare these healthy snacks for your little ones so that you can be sure they will have some nutrients during this time.

For adult parties all these recipes will be a hit! Get creative and top any of the cookies or protein balls with Halloween decorations. Nothing says Halloween more than a plastic spider, lol.

Preparing for a Halloween Party

If you are going to a party bring healthy treats! Everyone loves a guest that shows up with snacks. Control your options. Provide great healthy treats for yourself and everyone else. DAMY Health has some awesome treat options that no one would even know is healthy. Many are featured in the list below.

Some basic examples of healthy snacks you can bring to a party are nuts, veggie trays, humus, lean meat skewers, or fruit trays. Listed are my favourite party dishes that are simple to make and won’t leave you stranded in the kitchen.

Halloween Party Snacks

Pin Wheel Veggie Wraps or Veggie Sushi

On an Ezekiel or 100% Whole Grain wraps, spread hummus (spicy/garlic) over half the wrap, cut yellow, red and orange peppers into long thing slices, place the peppers on the wrap on the hummus side (1 layer), take two pepperoncini per wrap (found in your bottled hot pepper section), thinly dice and spread evenly over the peppers and hummus. Then roll the wraps lengthwise. Cut off the ends (your snack while cooking) and then cut the rest of the wrap into 1-inch rounds. Place rounds flat on serving a tray. Make lots!! They are a hit!

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Fall is the time for making one of my favorite seeds to snack on… Pumpkin seeds are nutritious and delicious plus they are an excellent source of iron, fiber and are rich in vitamins B and E. Try roasting them with salt or experiment with other seasoning blends such as Mrs. Dash seasonings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Pumpkin Seeds
  • 3 Tsp Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300° F.
  2. Clean seeds. It’s okay to leave a little of the pulp or strings on the seeds but remove excess.
  3. Toss the pumpkin seeds into a bowl with the oil and seasonings and mix.
  4. Spread as a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally until lightly golden brown.
  5. If there is any extra oil pat dry using paper towel.

Jack O’ Lantern Dip

Carve out a small pumpkin (or a few) to use as dip containers. Paint a face on the pumpkin instead of cutting holes, or cut only partway through. The perfect seasonal dip tray! Our favourite dip choices are:

Resist the Halloween Treat Bag Temptation

If you create treat bags for your visitors and always find yourself nibbling, do your bags up this year with a partner who knows your goals and will hold you accountable. Do up the treat bags after a nice healthy supper so that you are full and not tempted.

After you create your treat bags place them out of sight! A high cupboard or somewhere you won’t see them on a daily basis works great. So many people tell me they don’t even think about eating a treat until they see them.

If you are faced with extra treats left over after Halloween you can give them to your neighborhood children, a teacher you know, bring them to the office the next day, or donate them to your local YMCA or food bank.

What to Focus on this Halloween

Make your holiday more about the fun than the food! Choose a great Halloween themed game to play with your children, watch a spooky film or really get involved in the costume making! Painting pumpkins is really fun and creates less mess than carving. Having a taste of a treat isn’t the end of the world. The good news is that chocolate bars and chips are in snack sizes.

If you have been craving a treat like crazy choose what you really want and have TWO. It is easy to get carried away with these bite sized treats as they are small but mighty!

All occasions should be fun, not stressful or filled with worry! Choose to place your attention on the fun moments and the spirit of the holiday. Planning ahead is 90% of your success. Enjoy family and friends or just the neighborhood children! We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!
