This is an advanced section and will develop over time. We know inflammation is a significant block to efficient weight loss but it tends to be a complex beast. It can cause imbalance in all other systems.

If you have been diagnosed with a condition that is pain or fatigue related and have been having a difficult time losing weight this section is for you. This is one of those situations where working with someone like myself is essential. This is such a broad area but many of the principles will be applicable to each diagnosis.

Take your time with this section and see how overall health can improve when inflammation and pain are reduced.

Why managing pain and inflammation is important in weight loss:

Pain is debilitating and discouraging. It prevents us from exercising and takes away our mental capacity to make positive decisions. Often it leads to overeating or binging. Inflammation can reduce metabolism, block fullness hormone signalling (leptin) and cause fatigue (preventing us from feeling good and exercising properly).

Where to start:

This will depend on what you have been through so far. This is a complex section and trial and error is usually required. Be patient and continue to move forward with your treatment.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of inflammation can be either very evident, obvious and specific or the complete opposite, widespread, low-lying and general. The term inflammation is defined as a complex of symptoms that are used to heal injured tissue. If the body over-responds it can cause further harm. We also use the term inflamed to describe the effects the immune system has on the body during an autoimmune response. It is important to differentiate the two examples. Figure out where you stand and move forward with treatments.

WORKUP

The basic workup for inflammation can include the following blood tests:

  • white blood cells
  • CRP
  • ESR

An advanced workout could include the following (depending on associated symptoms):

  • CDSA stool analysis for markers of inflammation
  • Adrenal panel for inflammation recovery
  • Oxidative stress and anti-oxidant status through the DUTCH panel
  • Antibody testing for autoimmune disease
  • Antibody testing for foods
  • Antibody, DNA, ImmunoBlot testing for chronic infections

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

For the purpose of the holistic approach to weight loss we will focus on chronic low level inflammation that isn’t caused by injury or acute autoimmune flare ups. Try these. They can be effective:

  • Build a morning routine around water, fruit, stretching and movement.
  • Make sure digestion is consistent with a bowel movement everyday.
  • Spend as much time in nature as possible (with your bare feet on the ground).
  • Try an elimination/challenge diet – see module 10
  • Build a mid-day routine with turmeric tea, meditation and veggies.
  • Exercise daily
  • Drink 2L water/day
  • Build a nighttime routine around fun, gratitude and calm including epsum baths, protein/fat and reading

SUPPLEMENTS

The basics here are effective but contraindicated in bleeding disorders and with blood thinners. Consult before starting at these doses:

  • Omega 3 – 3000mg (combined EPA and DHA/day)
  • Curcumin – 1500mg (divided doses)
  • Bioflavanoids and Vitamin C
  • Boswellia, Ginger and Quercetin
  • Serrapeptase
  • MSM

In pain we use a protocol that include a combination of those above plus the following:

  • Devil’s claw
  • White Willow
  • Jamaican Dogwood
  • Glucosamine

Topicals could include one or more of the following:

  • Capsicum – joint pain
  • Magnesium oil – tight muscles
  • MSM cream – joint inflammation
  • MSM with menthol herbs – inflamed joints with tight, painful tendons
  • Voltarin – pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory (NSAID)
