CRAVING & HUNGER MANAGEMENT

BLOCK 10 – CAUSES & TREATMENTS IN INTENSE CRAVINGS & HUNGER HORMONE BALANCING

If you are experiencing hunger and cravings this guide is essential. It is always helpful to know the why behind symptoms like these. Humans can go a very long time without food (not water) and signals from the brain to eat do not always reflect caloric requirements. See below to balance these signals so that you can stay in fat burning and reach your goals.

Why hunger and craving management is important in weight loss:

Hunger causes overeating and cravings cause poor food choices. They both can lead to high caloric intake at improper times.

Where to start:

If you are consuming each of your daily meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) but still notice night time hunger you might find benefit in the concepts provided below. If you eat balanced meals (all food combining options) and still have cravings for a specific food we need to find out why.

SYMPTOMS

These symptoms can range from simple feelings of hunger to a strong desire for sugar. Like most blocks previous it can be helpful to document your symptoms in a journal. When are they happening? Are they for a certain food? Am I getting each of my portions at breakfast, lunch and dinner? Am I just thirsty?

Lets figure this out.

  • Cravings for salt, sugar or fat
  • Hunger during a fast
  • Not satisfied after meals
  • Hunger pangs
  • Waking from sleep with hunger

WORKUP

There are a series of issues that can cause hunger during a weight loss journey. From stress to probiotic imbalance to inflammation because of the complexity of the human body it can be difficult to assess yourself. Usually no testing is required unless associated symptoms are present. See above blocks to determine if any lab testing could be helpful for you.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

You can manage hunger and cravings through lifestyle changes. Often distraction is effective but some of the other recommendations may even be better. This protocol is step-wise. Consider the following options in order:

  1. Drink water – hunger? Drink a large glass of water and move on.
  2. Move your body – Did you exercise today? Lets get 2 sets of squats in and re-assess hunger.
  3. Do something you enjoy – Are you just bored? Have you read anything interesting today or practised any self care? Lets do it now.
  4. Use a touch of discipline during your fast – Are you having trouble with your fast? We all do. Make it through the night and have a good breakfast. You will be fine.
  5. Turn to tea – Sometimes an anti-inflammatory tea or a tea know to improve satiety is the only answer. I like black, green, white or turmeric.
  6. Go to other liquids – Need something in your hands to get through this? Try anything sugar free – Kombucha, Zevia, lemon water, etc.

SUPPLEMENTS

You may want to turn to supplements to help with your cravings and hunger. We like the following options:

  • Chromium – between meals and after dinner
  • Resistant starch – like Ultra Glucose control – with lunch
  • Curcumin – after dinner as an antiinflammatory
  • Berberine – if probiotic imbalance and blood sugar swings
