Healthy Eating: How to Have a Treat

Chocolate Protein CakeToday is your “how do I plan my treat” day! When you’re on a healthy eating plan I recommend having a little something once a week! The best thing you can do is make your treat yummy and healthy and plan it in advance!

I love having 4 squares of dark chocolate, a glass or two of wine, or a nice healthy dinner!

There are so many options out there for healthy treats. Here at DAMY I have created some really amazing ones. Some of my favourites include:

Plan your treat in advance – Always.

All DAMY Members know the importance of planning treats in advance. It really is the best way to stay on tract and avoid going overboard! What I love to do is plan my treats on Monday for Friday night… I simply write whatever I’ve been craving in my book and get back to my plan.

On the day of your planned treat re-evaluate if you are still craving it. At times you won’t even be interested in the treat any more. If that happens reschedule it for the next week!

If you’re still craving the treat go for it! BUT – Don’t overdo it. Stick within your planned limits.

After having your treat make sure to jump right back onto your plan!
 

Treat Planning: Repeat this statement to yourself

Repeat this statement to yourself as an affirmation that you are dedicated to your healthy lifestyle. This will help you stay on track!

“I am going to eat clean for 2 weeks and do all my workouts. At the end of those 2 weeks I am going to have… (insert treat in moderation here – try to make it healthy). Ex. 3 pieces of dark chocolate and a glass of wine.”

Plan it! Stick to the portion sizes! You will be so happy with yourself!
 

The 3-Time Rule: Avoiding the Overindulgence

If you find yourself craving a treat or craving something off plan and you are close to a goal try this…

  • Ask yourself 3 times if you really want it (space this out for 10-15 minutes).
  • Then drink a big glass of water.
  • Finally ask yourself – Is the treat currently more important than the goal?

I use this often and it really works!!!

I want you to control your emotional eating. This is the only way to break patterns of behavior. I want to have you all planning to have your treat! I don’t want to hear “I had a bad day so I ate a cake.” We all know this does not make the bad day any better. In fact it makes it worse.

We need to recognize when we are upset, angry, sad and deal with the emotion. At the end of the day we all have the choice of what we put in our mouths – no matter what. This takes time to learn and change.
 

Task for the Day

Your task for the day is to start planning your treats in advance! Whenever you experience a craving write it down. When your time comes to have your weekly treat evaluate your craving list. Is there anything on there you still want? If so, is there any way you can make it healthy using DAMY Healthy Treat recipes?

Go for your treat – keep it in moderation – and get right back to your plan when you’re done! Stick to this method and you will continue to have success with healthy eating.
